Who is John Angus and why is he trying to prevent New Zealand citizens from exercising their democractic right to protest?

John  Angus is the Children’s Commissioner.

In case you are wondering what this man looks like he has multiple pictures of himself available at the Children’s Commissioner’s website.

Yesterday Mr Angus (a government employee and funded by the New Zealand taxpayer)  attempted to subvert the democratic rights of all New Zealanders to protest by releasing a statement which said:

“The march planned for Queen St, Auckland, tomorrow is not about democracy, it is
about reinstating a law that allowed parents to assault their children and claim a
defense of reasonable force,” Dr Angus said.

“The evidence tells us smacking is bad for children and that the majority of parents in
New Zealand don’t want to smack their children to discipline them.

What evidence? What majority? Did this man not notice that 1.53 million New Zealander’s voted NO in the recent referendum?

I DON”T PAY TAXES SO THIS MAN CAN TELL ME OR MY FAMILY NOT TO MARCH IN A PEACEFUL PROTEST!!!

According to John Angus

13 July 2009
Life has improved for New Zealand’s younger citizens since the Office of the Children’s Commissioner was formed 20 years ago, Children’s Commissioner Dr John Angus said today.

No it hasn’t our children are being killed at almost the rate of one a week .

But John assures us parent’s needn’t worry about the new law

The police are able to choose not to prosecute in cases of
minor assault

Good to know that NZ parents who choose to smack are now classified as having assaulted their children under the new Act.

More “helpful” advice for parents from the Commissioner’s “Choose to Hug” booklet

there are many things a parent can do…
positive actions that help the child feel safe, loved and
guided. Smacking and hitting are not part of these actions.

And this – The United Nations Agenda

The law brings New Zealand in line with many other countries that ban physical punishment.  There is a strong movement throughout the world towards ending physical punishment of children. The number of countries that make all physical punishment of children illegal is growing rapidly – in Europe, in South America. New Zealand is the first country in Australasia to do so. New Zealand can now play a part in influencing other countries.

Mr Angus patronisingly told New Zealand parents yesterday

People genuinely interested in children’s welfare would be better to enjoy time with them, encouraging them in their sport or recreation on a Saturday, than on the poorly named March for Democracy,

Perhaps Child Commissioners genuinely interested in children’s welfare would be better to spend their time, encouraging people to stop beating  their children to death,  rather than trying to interfere with New Zealanders freedom of speech.

I think this man’s actions are a disgrace. He should be asked to resign. It is one thing to use your position to advocate on behalf of children, another to attempt to undermine our democracy. What makes his actions worse is that he is using taxpayer’s money to do it.

I agree. Since when did New Zealander take advice from Children’s Commissioners as to what they should do?
The guy has some nerve. And why after the Anti Smacking legislation has been introduced have so many children died?

Why isn’t the Government doing something about the real causes of child abuse? It’s a national disgrace to see so many children dying. And here this guy is worrying about good NZ parents who occasionally give their kids a light smack??? Go figure.

I would have thought that it was the responsibility of parents to be advocates for their children. It seems to me that this guy (and de Bres) just allow us to say to the UN (or whoever) that we are actually doing something when actually these positions just waste tax payers hard earned money.
